Lošinj Island – The Jewel of the Kvarner Bay
The island of Lošinj, located at the heart of the Cres-Lošinj island group, is part of the western chain of the Kvarner Islands within the Kvarner Bay. Alongside the Gulf of Trieste, it represents the deepest Mediterranean penetration into the European mainland, making Lošinj an ideal destination for nature lovers, culture enthusiasts, and relaxation seekers. The Cres-Lošinj island group stretches over 99 kilometers and spans an area of 513 km², accounting for 16% of the total surface area of the Adriatic Islands. This archipelago includes larger islands like Cres (409 km²) and Lošinj (75 km²), as well as smaller yet equally attractive islands like Unije (17 km²), Ilovik (6 km²), Susak (4 km²), and Vele Srakane (1 km²), along with numerous uninhabited islets. Lošinj, the eleventh largest island in the Adriatic, stretches 33 kilometers in length, with its width ranging from 4.75 kilometers in the north and central part to just 0.25 kilometers near Mali Lošinj. Its indented coastline spans 112.7 kilometers, offering numerous bays and beaches ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxation. The highest peak on Lošinj, the forested Osoršćica (588 m), runs along the northern part of the island and offers breathtaking panoramic views. Nearby, on the island of Cres, is Sis (650 m), the highest point of this archipelago, as well as the natural phenomenon of Vrana Lake. This freshwater lake contains over 200 million cubic meters of water and provides drinking water for the entire archipelago. In the past, Cres and Lošinj were a single island. However, during the Roman era, an artificial canal was dug near Osor, dividing them into two islands. Today, they are connected by a road bridge, forming a unique traffic and geographical unit. Lošinj is not just an island – it is a destination that combines natural beauty, cultural richness, and a subtropical climate. Its bays, mountains, and rich flora and fauna provide an unforgettable experience for all visitors.
