Veli Lošinj

Veli Lošinj is a little, charming town situated in a narrow, protected bay on the southeast side of the island of Lošinj. It is the second biggest place after Mali Lošinj and the houses gradually "grew" one on top of the other starting from the ones right next to the port of Veli Lošinj. You can see a cylinder shaped tower rising above serried houses in the very heart of town dating back to past times. It was first built for protecting the island from pirate attacks, today we can see it on the town's coat of arms. In the past, Veli Lošinj (meaning Big Lošinj) as the very name says it, used to be bigger than Mali Lošinj (Little Lošinj) but through the years Mali developed faster and thus became actually bigger but the names stayed the same.

Nifty facades of old houses have a special way of telling a story of passed times and likable narrow streets hide luxurious villas belonging to captains and ship owners whose gardens are filled with exotic plants. When we talk about Veli Lošinj, we must not forget to mention Rovenska, a beautiful bay, an old fishermen's port that breathes tradition of the people who devoted their lives to the sea and to fishing.
