Vele i Male Srakane

Welcome to Srakane Islands

Explore Vele and Male Srakane – A Hidden Gem of the Croatian Coast

About the Srakane Islands

West of Lošinj and nestled between Unije and Susak, the Srakane Islands consist of two picturesque islands: Vele Srakane and Male Srakane. As the name suggests, Vele Srakane is the larger of the two, located to the north of Male Srakane and south of Unije.

Vele Srakane

With a length of 2.5 km and a surface area of 1.2 km², Vele Srakane is a serene escape. At the top of Vela hill, 60 meters above sea level, lies a prehistoric hill-fort. The remains of the old citadel include a semi-circular wall, a relic of a fortress once used to defend against sea raiders.

Notably, a Roman tombstone is embedded in the corner of Skrivanić's house, adding historical depth to this tranquil island.

Transportation and Facilities

There are no harbors on the coast. The boat from Mali Lošinj lands at a small pier in Gornja Trata bay, but advance notice is necessary. Vele Srakane is car-free, offering a unique chance to reconnect with nature.

Keep in mind, there are no shops on the island. All supplies, including water, must be brought along. This simplicity adds to the charm of Srakane.

Religious and Cultural Highlights

Vele Srakane is home to the Church of St. Ann, while Male Srakane boasts the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Mass is celebrated only on feast days, with parish priests visiting from nearby islands Susak and Ćunj.
